Nomad Lamai Serengeti is one of the Serengeti's newest safari lodges, having opened towards the end of 2011. It's a miracle that a camp didn't open in Lamai's place earlier, as the location, on top of a rocky kopje that overlooks the Lamai Wedge and the Masai Mara beyond, is just fantastic. On the border with the Masai Mara, it's also perfectly placed to witness the great migration between July and October.
In keeping with other camps in the Nomad portfolio, Lamai is an upmarket camp of the very highest standards. Several of the Nomad camps in Tanzania are new, but all have managed to stand out amid the competition, and Lamai is no exception. The camp is small and intimate, with just twelve guest rooms split between two separate but closely located campsites: Main Camp, with eight rooms, and the more exclusive Private Camp with just four. The tents and the open-air communal areas are generously-sized, ensuring that the camp doesn't feel cramped, but rather open and spacious like the vast plains that surround it.
Accommodation
Designed using a mixture of canvas, plaster and wooden beams, the rooms at Nomad Lamai couldn't quite be described as tents. They have a rustic, quite simple design, and from the outside blend in naturally with the rocks of the kopje. Each room has a wide verandah positioned to make the most of the stunning views.
Inside, the rooms are bright and airy, and painted in cream and beige hues that recall the classic safari camps of old, though the polished wooden floors and more modern furnishings give Lamai a different feel to many other East African camps. At the centre of each room is a full king-size bed draped in mosquito netting, positioned to give a view of the outside. The bathrooms feature double basins, showers and flush toilets (no baths).
The rooms in the Private Camp are similar in design to those in Main Camp, but have access to a separate swimming pool, lounge and dining area.
Dining
Both Main Camp and Private Camp have access to separate dining areas. Breakfast is a simple buffet with cooked meals to order. Lunch, if not taken in the bush, is a light buffet of salads and cold meats. Dinner is somewhat more formal, table d'hôte affair, served around a communal dining table.
