Peponi Hotel is one of Kenya's finest and oldest beach hotels. Founded in 1967 by the Danish Korschen family, this classic hotel occupies an enviable location on the richly historic island of Lamu, the heart of Swahili culture.
Lamu is the perfect island getaway, boasting fabulous beaches and a wonderful, romantic atmosphere; there is only one car on the island and the narrow streets of the old town are very much as they always were. Peponi Hotel, too, has retained much of its original charm and character, despite undergoing several renovations in the five decades since it opened. Small and intimate, it's atmosphere is very much in keeping with that of Lamu as a whole, making it a wonderful place to relax at the end of a hot, dusty safari!
The bar at Peponi Hotel is a favourite dive for both hotel guests and locals alike. The pool at Peponi is a great spot to relax under the shade of tall baobab trees and enjoy the ocean view.
Accommodation
Peponi Hotel offers 24 rooms, which come in standard and superior categories. The room categories differ mostly in size, the amenities being largely the same—overhead fan, large double bed with mosquito net, bathroom en-suite with shower (no tub).
The rooms at Peponi Hotel feature a stylish blend of modern and Swahili furnishings, though the precise layout and decor varies in each. The locations, too, vary, with some positioned on the beach and others several metres back. All enjoy a view of the ocean from their private verandahs.
In a lovely touch, the rooms are made up each day with fresh flowers.
