Kicheche Laikipia Camp is a luxury bush camp situated in Ol Pejeta Conservancy, on the Laikipia Plateau. Like all of the Kicheche Camps (of which there are four, with the other three in the Masai Mara), Laikipia Camp is a small, intimate camp, with an emphasis on comfort and on quality game-viewing. These are luxury camps, but very sensibly priced. We consider them among the very best camps in Kenya.
Kicheche Laikipia is located in a private conservancy, Ol Pejeta, which hosts only a few other camps, ensuring that you won't encounter the sort of crowds that you sometimes see in Kenya's busy national parks. Ol Pejeta is a fenced conservancy, but it holds a great variety of game, including Kenya's largest population of black rhino. Elephant, lion, leopard and cheetah are also present in healthy numbers—the lion sightings are particularly good.
Kicheche Laikipia Camp employs superb guides, some of Kenya's best. Good guides are what make a good safari, and although Laikipia is not Kenya's most famous or spectacular wilderness area, when our staff were last at Kicheche Camp they enjoyed one of the best safaris they've experienced in Kenya, led by Kicheche's head guide, Andrew Obaga, whose sense of humour and great knowledge made even the most common wildlife sightings fascinating.
Laikipia Kicheche Camp is open between June and March. Ol Pejeta Conservancy is 30 minutes' drive from Nanyuki airstrip.
Accommodation
Kicheche Laikipia Camp has just six tents, accommodating no more than twelve adults at a time. The tents are spread out among the bush. They are big and spacious, and beautifully furnished with large beds, rugs, heavy wooden furniture and comfy seats. Each has a private verandah overlooking a watering hole, and an en-suite bathroom with twin basins, bucket shower and flush loo.
The tents all follow the same design, though one is slightly larger and designed to accommodate a family.
Dining
The meals at Kicheche Laikipia are wonderful, with most of the produce sourced from farms in the local area. Breakfast and lunch are typically served al fresco on the grass overlooking the watering hole, while dinner is served around a communal table in the dining tent, usually preceded by campfire drinks. Kicheche is typically booked full-board with drinks included. There is a well-stocked bar.
Picnic breakfasts and lunches are also available on game driving excursions.
