Wolwedans is a collection of five very intimate bush camps and lodges in the NamibRand Nature Reserve, a private wildlife reserve encompassing 450,000 acres of the Namib Desert, southern Namibia. Built in 1999, Dunes Lodge is the largest and most impressive property in the collection.
Wolwedans Dunes Lodge enjoys a simply marvellous location, situated atop a high dune plateau that is surrounded on all sides by the vast expanse of the Namib Desert. It is a permanent lodge, comprised of nine wood-and-canvas chalets raised on stilts and a spacious central hub. But the natural materials used in its construction give Dunes Lodge the appearance and feel of a remote, rustic bush camp.
Like the guest chalets, the main public areas at Wolwedans Dunes Lodge are simple wood-and-canvas structures, built above the sands on stilts. There are two lounge areas that open out onto a spacious sundeck, as well as a wine cellar and library. Though outwardly simple, the public areas at Wolwedans Dunes Lodge are beautifully appointed and very inviting. There are plenty of spots to relax: by the open-air fireplace, in the shaded hammocks on the sundeck, or in the swimming pool overlooking the Namib Desert.
There’s a wide variety of activities available at Wolwedans, from the usual game drives and guided walks to hot air balloon rides and scenic flights. The quality of guiding is superb.
Wolwedans Dunes Lodge is open throughout the year.
Accommodation
Wolwedans Dunes Lodge is the largest property in the Wolwedans collection, but it’s by no means a big resort. With just nine spacious guest chalets, it retains the intimate, private feel that the Wolwedans camps are known for.
The rooms at Dunes Lodge are just stunning. They are large units, built on wide wooden decks raised above the dunes on stilts. They are constructed mostly out of wood, but the walls are canvas, and roll up to reveal dramatic views of the Namib Desert. Each chalet has a wide wrap-around verandah, onto which the beds can be rolled out for sleep-outs under the stars. En-suite bathrooms feature dual basins, flush loos and showers.
In addition to the nine standard chalets, there is a private Mountain View Suite, located apart from the main camp but still within walking distance. It is larger than the standard chalets, and features a private deck, kitchenette and dining area.
