Located in the elegant embassy area of Yangon, just outside the busy city centre and not far from the Shwedagon Pagoda, the Belmond Governor’s Residence is a stunning 1920s colonial mansion turned boutique hotel. Formerly the home of the British governor in Burma, the house is a curious mixture of Victorian and traditional Burmese architecture, constructed largely of teak and hidden away in tropical gardens. Its relatively small size (48 guest rooms and suites) adds to the hotel’s very exclusive character.
The Belmond Governor’s Residence is an Orient & Express (since 2014, Belmond) hotel.
Accommodation
The Belmond Governor’s Residence features 48 beautifully-appointed rooms. The teak floors and replica antique furniture, softened by silk fabrics, give the hotel a touch of class and elegance, while all the expected modern amenities are accounted for. We especially like the bathrooms, with their large sunken bathtubs
The rooms are largely identical, differing only in view, with most overlooking the garden lawns and lotus pond. There are three suites, however: one two-bedroom family unit and two honeymooner rooms—which offer greater space and more lavish furnishings.
Dining
The food and service is generally superb at the Governor’s Residence. The Mandalay Restaurant is smart and formal and serves a good selection of local and international favourites, while the more relaxed Burmese Curry Table offers a buffet of delicate local curries served over charcoal burners. Light refreshments are available in the open-air Mindon Lounge.
