Founded in 1959, the Caravelle’s location on Lam Son Square in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City made it a focus for visiting dignitaries and a veritable army of press corps during the Indochina Wars.
At the time of its creation, the Caravelle’s decidedly modern aesthetic – evident in its unique curved design, original 9-storey structure and stylish rooftop terrace and bar – set it apart from other Saigon Hotels. The 24-storey tower was added to the original hotel in the 1990s, bringing the total number of rooms to 335. In recent years the Caravelle has been outstripped by larger and grander hotels, but it remains one of the city’s major landmarks.
The Caravelle’s storied history isn’t its only attraction. Its location in the centre of Saigon, close to the French Quarter, the Opera House and Benh Than Market, makes it an ideal base for a short stay in the city. The rooms are immaculately furnished and equipped with all the expected modern conveniences.
Facilities at the Caravelle include an outdoor swimming pool, rooftop bar, healthclub and sauna, top-class restaurant and Wi-Fi throughout the hotel.
Accommodation
The Caravelle’s 335 rooms and suites are generously-sized and furnished. Most have floor-to-ceiling windows to make the most of the city or river views. The best and most expensive rooms are located in the historic wing of the hotel, though the top-floor suites in the new block also stand out.
Dining
The Caravelle has two restaurants: Nineteen, a casual buffet restaurant, and the more formal Reflections Restaurant, which offers an a la carte menu with Western and Asian flavours.
The popular Saigon Saigon Bar on the roof of the original hotel was a favourite haunt of foreign correspondents during the Vietnam-American War.
