Adjoining Giants Castle Nature Reserve in the stunning Drakensberg region, this country retreat offers peace and tranquillity in a beautiful mountain setting.
Cleopatra presents itself as a gourmet hideaway (it began as a cooking school), and indeed the food is as much a highlight as the mountain scenery. Hosts Mouse and Richard Poynton personally oversee the kitchen at Cleopatra, preparing a delightful array of dishes for their guests, using mostly locally-grown produce and fresh river fish. After sampling the menu you won't be surprised to learn that the restaurant has won numerous awards!
Cleopatra is ideally positioned for exploring the Drakensbergs, as it is near to the Highmoor and Kamberg Nature Reserves, Giant’s Castle and the Midlands Meander.
Accommodation
Accommodation at Cleopatra Farmhouse consists of 11 rooms and suites each with the usual modern amenities—television, hairdryer, tea/coffee facilities, safe, fireplace—and a lovely view!
The rooms are all individually decorated, each to a particular theme (eg. the Cowboy Room, featuring cowskin rug and a wagon wheel for decor; the Classical room, featuring Roman busts on the mantle; the Swedish Naturalist Room, featuring... you get the idea). It's clearly been done in a spirit of fun and the themes aren't followed to excess.
Dining
The food at Cleopatra’s really is superb and for many the highlight. A delicious farm style breakfast is provided. Picnic lunches can be arranged. Delicious and varied dinner menus are provided each evening, with meat, fish and vegetarian options across several courses, and fine wines to match. All meals are served in the homely dining room.
