Eagle Island Lodge is situated on Xaxaba Island, in the very heart of the Okavango Delta. This was the location of one of the Okavango's very first tourist camps (Xaxaba Camp), and it remains one of the Delta's best locations, both for its stunning scenery and prodigious game. Eagle Island occupies pride of place on the island, tucked away under lala palms on the edge of a busy lagoon. Its public areas are all under thatch, and consist of lounge, bar, dining area, raised viewing deck and pool, positioned so as to make the most of the stunning views.
It's common to distinguish between safari camps and safari lodges. With Eagle Island Lodge we might better distinguish between lodges and hotels. The rooms at Eagle Island have the sort of amenities one would expect from an upmarket city hotel—air-conditioning, mini-bar, electronic safe, telephone, hair dryer. There's also a large swimming pool with sunloungers, rather than a small plunge pool as offered at other camps.
It's far from a traditional bush camp, then, but many will appreciate the additional comforts offered by Eagle Island Lodge. Others, however, may prefer the more intimate atmosphere of a luxury bush camp.
Due to its location in the heart of the Delta, in a region with little permanent dry land, game-viewing activities at Eagle Island Lodge are entirely water-based. Mokoro safaris are the main activity, but basic walking safaris within the vicinity of the camp are also offered.
Eagle Island Lodge is managed by the Orient Express (now Belmond) hotel chain.
Accommodation
Eagle Island Lodge offers twelve luxury tents, all raised on teak platforms and shaded under thatch. Each tent has a private deck complete with hammock. Other amenities include mini-bar, air-conditioning and en-suite bathroom.
Eagle Island Lodge also offers a private suite, set apart from the public areas and the main tents, and boasting its own private pool and open-air bathroom.
Dining
Dining at Eagle Island is a treat. Enjoy private dinners amid the intimacy of your own private deck, or share stories with the other guests in the open-air dining room. On a clear night, tables are set up on the viewing decks under the stars.
There is a bar and campfire to relax and socialise around in the evenings.
