Flatdogs Camp is a superb low-cost safari camp situated a short drive from the main Mfuwe Gate of the South Luangwa National Park. For those on a budget who nevertheless want excellent guiding and game viewing, Flatdogs Camp is among the best options in the area. It's beautifully located, pitched under the shade of winterthorn and mahogany trees in a region that is home to a good variety of game, including a substantial population of giraffe attracted by the region's many acacia trees. Flatdogs offers private full day game drives of up to 12 hours to all corners of the park, ensuring a rich game-viewing experience.
Facilities at Flatdogs include a swimming pool, restaurant, bar, satellite TV and games room with pool table.
Accommodation
Originally an overlander stop, Flatdogs Camp has been upgraded in recent years to a higher quality camp, and now offers a range of accommodation options from comfortable en-suite chalets to large safari tents.
Flatdogs also has 4 two-storey chalets, designed with groups and families in mind. Each has two bedrooms, a communal kitchen and dining room, and an en-suite bathroom. Downstairs there is a double room with fan and a wrap-around veranda, whilst upstairs has a second twin room with a view of the river and a thatched roof.
In addition there is one family chalet, with two single beds on a mezzanine floor, one room with twin beds and a couch (which can also be a single) and one with a double and single. All beds have mosquito nets.
More recent additions to Flatdogs include seven luxury tents. These have great views, overlooking either the Luangwa River or a lagoon, and better-quality furnishings, offering the sort of comforts associated with a mid-range safari camp. They have open-air, but walled, bathrooms at the back.
Finally, there's a private treehouse, the Jackalberry, located some distance from the camp and offering a more intimate experience.
Dining
Unlike most safari camps, there are no set menus or meal times at Flatdogs. Meals are served on an a la carte basis at whatever time you choose. The camp can be booked on a full-board basis but doesn't have to be; the chalets, though not the tents, are equipped with self-catering facilities for those on self-drive safaris.
