Fundu Lagoon is a gorgeous boutique lodge situated on Pemba Island, Zanzibar's little neighbour. It's the quintessential island getaway, accessible only by boat and offering beach bungalow accommodation on a beautiful stretch of the Pemba coast. Wonderfully remote, the lodge offers a great alternative to the busy resorts on Zanzibar.
Fundu Lagoon is privately-owned and managed, and it shows. Created by Scottish designer Ellis Flyte, there are lots of lovely touches and unique elements to its design, like the tented rooms, more reminiscent of a safari lodge then a conventional beach hotel (the public areas, in contrast, are more typical, consisting of Swahili open-air thatch bandas, as used in many Zanzibar resorts).
The beach at Fundu is lovely and receives few visitors. It's possible to dive, though do note that it's quite a bit more expensive here than it is on Zanzibar.
Accommodation
There are eighteen tented bungalows at Fundu Lagoon, built under thatch on raised wooden decks – those arriving on Pemba after a mainland safari will feel right at home! The tents are scattered among the tropical gardens, each with a private balcony overlooking the beach.
The interiors are beautiful, with romantic full-size beds draped in fine linen and mosquito netting. The dark panel flooring and the canvas walls combine to give the rooms a very natural, rustic feel – cosy and comfortable, but not excessively lavish. At the back they open onto an en-suite bathroom with walk-in shower.
There are three categories of room at Fundu: standard, suite and superior. The suites and superior rooms are larger and have private plunge pools. The superior also have a large, stone walled bathroom in contrast to the wood-panel bathrooms in the standard rooms and suites - we actually prefer the latter, so don't be put off the standard rooms.
Dining
The venue for dinner changes each evening. Sometimes dinner is served on the deck close to the lantern-lit jetty. At other times it's in the open-air restaurant or on the beach under the stars with a fire crackling away.
