Gorah Elephant Camp is an upmarket bush camp in a private concession of Addo Elephant National Park. It has one of the best locations in the park, overlooking a busy watering hole, meaning you needn't even leave the camp to enjoy good game-viewing.
At the heart of Gorah Elephant Camp is Gorah House, a 19th-century mansion that has been carefully restored. Guests at Gorah stay in lavish tented suites, but dine and lounge in the main house. The atmosphere and decor is formal - polished silver, crystal chandeliers and dark interiors - either the height of elegance, or just staid colonial-era nostalgia, depending on your tastes.
The game-viewing experience at Gorah is about as good as it gets in Addo, with options to explore the park on foot, horseback, or by 4WD. Addo is a small park, but it has very large concentrations of game, including almost 600 elephant. Big game sightings are reliable and generally good. The rangers at Gorah are experienced and personable, and make the experience worthwhile.
As the Park is small, it's also possible to explore other areas of the Eastern Cape from Gorah, including the coast.
Accommodation
There's an air of nostalgia to everything at Gorah Elephant Camp, including the tented suites, which aim at 'recalling the golden era of the safari in the 1900s'. They're huge khaki canvas tents, and have been furnished with assorted trinkets and period pieces that help set the atmosphere. At the front they open out onto a private veranda overlooking the surrounding wilderness. At the back is an en-suite bathroom with shower.
Dining
Dinner is a three-course meal served by candlelight in the dining room of the 19th-century home. Pre-dinner drinks are served on the veranda overlooking the watering hole.
