Hatari Lodge is Arusha National Park's standout safari lodge. Set on the grounds of the former home of Hardy Krüger - and taking its name from the 1960s' blockbuster movie 'Hatari!', which starred Krüger and which was filmed in the area - Hatari enjoys a fabulous location in the north of the park, overlooking the Momella meadow and, beyond it, Mt. Kilimanjaro.
Hatari Lodge stands out for its unique design. Each of the property's 9 rooms has been individually decorated, though all keep to a broadly retro theme, with art-deco and pop-art furnishings and vibrant 70s-style wallpaper in an effort to recall the era in which the home was first built. Hatari is not gaudy with its design, however, and despite its unique characteristics, it maintains an understated appeal, without being styled to excess.
Hatari Lodge's dining area, bar and lounge with fireplace are set within the original home, and furnished in a similar style to the guest rooms. The property opens onto a verandah and viewing platform overlooking the plains of Arusha National Park, where giraffe and buffalo are often sighted in the Momella clearing below the camp.
Most visitors to Arusha National Park enter on a day visit, but Hatari Lodge offers an excellent standard of accommodation for those planning a longer stay. The property is also a workable alternative to a standard city hotel in Arusha for overnight stays at the start or end of a broader safari itinerary. Hatari Lodge has recently been expanded with the addition of three villas, located apart from the main lodge. These villa feature two bedrooms each and private living and dining areas, making them ideal for families or small groups. The feature front and back terraces, the former overlooking Kilimanjaro and the latter overlooking Mt Meru.
