Hoodia is a gorgeous desert lodge positioned on the edge of the seasonal Tsauchab River, a rare source of life in this mostly dry, arid environment. This location offers great views of the Namib Desert as well as good opportunities for spotting local wildlife, such as the kudu which are often seen at the river.
There are just twelve chalets at Hoodia Desert Lodge, all built with canvas, thatch, natural stone and wood so that they appear almost an extension of the natural environment. The rooms are spacious and beautifully furnished. All are air-conditioned and have en-suite bathrooms (both indoor and outdoor) and outdoor sitting areas.
Hoodia Lodge is family-owned. Hosts Thomas and Henreza Becker, both of whom come from a food and hospitality background, offer warm, personable service.
Hoodia serves primarily as a base for visits to Sossusvlei, but it's also possible to enjoy guided walks along the Tsauchab River, or to vantage points overlooking the Namib Desert (including some great sundowner spots!) Longer excursions into the Naukluft Mountains are also offered – full-day excursions into the mountains with a picnic lunch are possible with advance notice.
Hoodia Lodge opened in 2008, and while it isn't as well-established as many other lodges in the area, we consider it one of the best places to stay, offering lovely accommodation and sensible rates.
Accommodation
Hoodia's twelve chalets are spread out to ensure a good level of privacy. Constructed of thatch, stone and canvas, they are decorated in warm, earthy colours. Each overlooks either the river or the mountains.
Each room at Hoodia Lodge has an indoor and outdoor bathroom, and a private sitting area.
