One of Saigon's oldest hotels (1925), the Majestic is an historic attraction in its own right. It occupies pride of place in the centre of the city, overlooking the Saigon River and the hustle and bustle of District 1.
For many years the Majestic was a state-owned hotel with an average reputation, but it has been through numerous renovations in recent years that have greatly improved it. From the outside, it doesn't appear to have changed much at all, its Art Deco facade recalling the glamour of the 1920s. Step inside, however, and you'll discover a thoroughly modern hotel, though not without a few relics that betray its age, from the picturesque - old wooden shutters and walkways - to the rather tacky - the gleaming gold busts and sculptures that dominate the lobby.
Not everyone will appreciate the Majestic's rather extravagant presentation, but for those wanting all the trappings and trimmings of a five-star hotel, the Majestic is a good choice. It offers perhaps the best value rooms in this category, and its location, right in the heart of the city, can't be beaten.
Accommodation
The Majestic's 175 rooms and suites are decorated in a rather less flamboyant style than the courtyard and lobby (and probably the better for it!) The standard rooms are generously sized and feature all the expected mod-cons: air conditioning, minibar, safety deposit box, satellite TV, direct dial phone, and tea- and coffee-making facilities. All rooms have a view of the courtyard or the Saigon River.
There isn't much reason to upgrade at the Majestic, beyond the fact that the suites are larger and feature Jacuzzis. The amenities are much the same between the room categories.
Dining
The Cyclo Restaurant, on the ground floor, has views across to the river and serves traditional Vietnamese cuisine. More familiar "international" cuisine is served in the 7th-floor Serenade restaurant and buffet-style in the al fresco Breeze Sky Bar. There's a marvellous rooftop bar.
