Ilboru Safari Lodge is situated at the base of Mt. Meru, just outside Arusha. Set on 5 acres of land, in a suburban area, the hotel is a pleasant escape from the bustle of the nearby city.
This family lodge is run by the Van Beurdens, a Dutch-Tanzanian couple. Both have worked in the hotel industry for many years and provide warm and friendly service, making for a great atmosphere. You’ll meet lots of Arusha folk who have come to see Ilboru as an affordable and friendly place to socialise. Besides working as a hotel manager, Ad Van Beurden has been a chef for various hotels and lodges, which is reflected in the food at Ilboru.
Ilboru Lodge has for many years been one of our recommended hotels for clients completing a Kilimanjaro climb on a budget. It offers easy access to the mountain, and probably the best standard of accommodation in this price range.
Accommodation
Ilboru's rooms are in rondavels of a traditional, uniquely African style. Each rondavel houses two self-contained rooms. This is a budget hotel, but with the extra space, every room is significantly larger than those of similar tourist hotels and lodges - and much more comfortable than hotels of a similar price in Arusha central. There are 30 rooms in total. All rooms have telephones and private balconies overlooking the gardens, but are otherwise simply furnished.
Dining
The food at Ilboru Lodge is generally very good. The owner and manager is a trained chef from the hotel industry and this is reflected in the meals.
Facilities
There is a large pool set in the gardens. If you don’t want to swim, simply lounge beside the pool with a drink.
Activities
Ilboru Lodge is generally just used as a one-night stop-over before or after a Kilimanjaro climb or Northern Circuit safari, but there are a few things to do in and around the lodge for those on longer stays, including hiking, boules, golf, shopping in Arusha market, and one and half day safaris.
Child Policy
Children of all ages can be accommodated at Ilboru Lodge.
