Khwai Tented Camp

Khwai Concession, Okavango Delta

Khwai Tented Camp

Khwai Tented Camp is a small, comfortable community-run bush camp situated in the game-rich Khwai concession, close to Moremi Game Reserve in the heart of the Okavango.

Khwai Tented Camp is a simple bush camp located in the Khwai Community Concession, close to Moremi. Formerly a mobile camp that would move to a new location each season, since 2012 Khwai Tented Camp has settled on a permanent location on the floodplains of the Khwai River, a short distance from Moremi.

Khwai Tented Camp captures perfectly the feel and atmosphere of a classic bush camp. Guests sleep in simple, 'Hemingway'-style tents, which are scattered around an elevated canvas marquee that functions as the camp's lounge and dining area, and which also has a campfire decl. The camp is pleasantly small, with just six tents, and the recent addition of a permanent family cottage. It is not a luxury camp.

Most of all, Khwai offers a superb game-viewing experience. The Khwai River is one of the major permanent water sources in the Delta, and so attracts huge wildlife concentrations. Khwai Tented Camp also has the advantage of being located close to Moremi Game Reserve, the very heart of the Delta. The focus at the camp is on land-based activities primarily—day and night game drives and walking safaris. Mokoro boat safaris are also an option when the water levels are high enough.

Accommodation

Just six tents, scattered among the trees on the Khwai River floodplain. Though now settled in a permanent location, Khwai Tented Camp still has the look and feel of a mobile camp, albeit with the added luxury of private facilities and flush toilets! At the front of each tent is a private verandah with a view of the surrounding bush. Inside, the tents are comfortably furnished with matting, comfy beds, canvas wardrobes and solar lighting.

Until recently, Khwai Tented Camp had no permanent structures, but it has recently been expanded with the addition of a permanent family cottage, constructed of stone and thatch. Though it's not entirely in keeping with the bush camp aesthetic, the family cottage is a lovely building, with an extended wrap-around verandah, open-plan lounge and bedroom, private bathroom and small dining area (though guests at the cottage can opt to dine with other guests in the communal dining area if preferred).

NB. The images we've provided of Khwai Tented Camp were taken before the move to a permanent location in 2012 and are now out of date. The tents are largely the same as those pictured, but now rest on permanent decking. The family villa is not photographed.

Dining

The food at Khwai Tented Camp is plentiful and tasty. A large buffet brunch is served after morning game activities, with plenty of fresh salad, cold meats, bread and pastries. Tea and cake is served in the afternoons, while dinner is a generous three-course plated meal, preceded by cold drinks and snacks around the campfire.

Activities

- Day and night game drives in the Khwai Concession and Moremi Game Reserve (daytime activities only)
- Walking safaris
- Mokoro safaris (seasonal)
- Visits to the Khwai community

Child Policy

Children aged 6 and over can be accommodated. Under 12s must share with an adult. Under 14s will not be able to join walking safaris.

The family cottage is of course ideal for families, but the tents can also accommodate a single child in addition to two adults.

Responsible Tourism

Khwai Tented Camp is run as a community project and all proceeds go directly to a local Community Trust. It is one of only a few successful community-run camps of this kind in Botswana.

The camp is solar-powered and decidedly low-impact (though the camp uses flush toilets rather than eco-toilets).
