Kikoti, meaning 'place of shelter' in Maasai, is a low-key, traditional safari camp, situated in a private sanctuary just outside of Tarangire National Park, where it nestles amid baobab, mopane and fig trees. Small and private, Kikoti offers a more intimate experience than the busier central Tarangire camps.
Situated adjacent to Tarangire National Park, Kikoti is one of the most remote camps in the region. Due to its location outside the Park boundaries, the game around Kikoti Camp is relatively limited. However, being outside the Park does offer certain advantages, such as the chance to enjoy nature walks led by Maasai rangers and night time game drives, neither of which are allowed within the boundaries of the national park. Kikoti also lies on the migration route for the plains game, which means that during the beginning of the dry season in July and towards the end of November, an array of game is often seen around the camp, particularly elephant and buffalo, which tend to congregate in large numbers.
It is a short drive from Kikoti Camp to the Tarangire National Park eastern gate, and approx. 2 hours to the core game viewing areas.
Accommodation
All the rooms at Maisha Kikoti have recently been upgraded and enhanced. They consist of raised thatched chalets with impressive views of the Tarangire hills. There are 8 double rooms and 10 twin rooms in total, all built from natural materials, with a design that echoes the classic safari tents of old.
The rooms are well-furnished and have en-suite bathrooms. Water is tanked in on a weekly basis as there is no natural supply by the camp. Hot water is available and the lights are power by solar.
There are lots of small features that make the rooms at Kikoti stand out, such as the woven rugs and the bed frames made from the apple wood and African ebony trees that are found outside Tarangire National Park. Each room has a private verandah where you can relax and take in your surroundings. Wildebeest, water buffalo, hyenas and zebra have been known to wander underneath the rooms.
Dining
Kikoti's restaurant serves freshly baked bread, fruits and vegetables in season and great home cooked meals. A breakfast buffet is served early to mid morning, with breakfast boxes provided for early morning game drives. Packed lunches can also be arranged, but are usually served in camp in the dining room. Dinner is a plated meal with fixed menus.
The bar serves South African wines, local beers, spirits and soft drinks.
