Kulala Desert Lodge occupies a fantastic location on the 90,000 acre Kulala Wilderness Reserve, in the heart of the Namib. The reserve borders the Namib Naukluft National Park and enjoys wonderful views of the red sand dunes of Sossusvlei.
The main lodge and public areas at Kulala comprise a cosy lounge, bar, dining room and pool. In a unique touch, the interior décor has been inspired by northern African Berber tradition, helping to give Kulala a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. Outside, there's a wrap-around viewing deck, which overlooks a small watering hole directly below the camp. The views of the vast Namib Desert, which stretches for miles in all directions, are spectacular.
Kulala Lodge is a wonderful wilderness retreat, and an ideal base from which to explore Sossusvlei and the Greater Namib. Within the Kulala Wilderness Reserve, visitors have the chance to take part in game drives and guided walking safaris, to learn more about the desert-adapted wildlife and to admire the dramatic desert scenery. Access to Namib Naukluft National Park, via a private gate on the Tsauchab River, opens up an even greater area to explore.
Kulala Desert Lodge can be booked on a full-board basis with all meals and activities or on a B&B basis without activities (for those on self-drive trips). Note that if booked on half-board basis, you can still arrange activities at the lodge, but the cost can be high.
Accommodation
There are 23 guest chalets at Kulala, constructed with thatch and canvas so as to blend in with their surrounds. Each has a connecting en-suite bathroom, which features an open-air shower set on wooden decking.
In what is favourite feature, each chalet has access to a private roof terrace where you can sleep out under the stars on a bedroll.
Dining
At Kulala most meals are served outside by candlelight, though in the cooler months the indoor dining area may be used. Dinner is a set menu of three courses. Breakfast is a light buffet, and lunch is usually a picnic served during the day's activities.
There's a cosy pub bar that is well-stocked with wines and beers.
