Kulala Wilderness Camp

Kulala Wilderness Camp is a ten-room retreat situated in the heart of the Namib Desert, on a 90,000-acre private reserve near Sossusvlei.

Kulala Wilderness Camp is a ten-roomed desert retreat situated in the heart of the Namib, on a 90,000-acre private reserve that borders the Naukluft Namib National Park and the great dunes of Sossusvlei. Located 15km from sister property Kulala Desert Lodge, the camp is built at the foot of a rock escarpment, and looks west for marvellous views of the surrounding mountains and desert.

The main area at Kulala Wilderness Camp is elevated under thatch and offers a homely and intimate atmosphere with a sparkling swimming pool, and cosy dining room and bar area. In keeping with the design of the other Kulala camps, the interiors are furnished in an unassuming, contemporary style, and are exceptionally comfortable.

On the edge of the oldest desert in the world, wildlife here is sparse but fascinating. Sightings of animals such as springbok, gemsbok, ostrich, bat-eared fox and aardwolf are possible in these rugged conditions. Activities include early morning guided game drives to the Sossusvlei dunes, nature drives and walks on the private reserve, day trips into the Namib-Naukluft mountains and early morning ballooning (at an extra cost).

Update: Kulala Wilderness Camp closed in 2012, and it is not currently clear if or when it will re-open. Its sister camps Kulala Desert Lodge and Little Kulala are still open and have in fact expanded since Kulala Wilderness Camp closed.
