Kwihala Camp is a fully-tented mobile safari camp located in the north of Ruaha National Park. Its name translates as "bush", a fitting name for this remote camp, which is located amidst some of the most beautiful scenery in Ruaha, on a high escarpment overlooking the surrounding plains and the Mwagusi River.
Kwihala lacks any permanent structures. It's very much a traditional bush camp, though a rather luxurious one, with many of the creature comforts you would expect from a high end lodge or fixed camp. Its greatest asset though is its superb location. The emphasis at Kwihala is on exploring the surrounding wilderness, and not on luxury pampering. It's fortunate, then, that the guiding at Kwihala is superb, with the camp employing a number of private guides who know the area extremely well.
Kwihala was established as an independent camp in 2006. It has since been bought by a respected camp operator, Asilia, in 2014, and will undergo basic refurbishment. We haven't visited the camp since it was taken over.
Accommodation
Kwihala Camp has just six tents, all located a good distance apart. They are furnished with twin beds, and feature integrated bathrooms equipped with flush loos and bucket showers. Each tent opens at the front onto a sheltered verandah area, complete with canvas chairs.
The tents at Kwihala Camp centre on the public lounge/dining area, contained within a large, open-air banda.
Dining
Meals are served in the mess tent at the centre of camp or outside under the stars. Breakfast and lunch, however, will just as often be enjoyed while out on game activities. 'Bonnet breakfasts', where your morning meal is laid out on the bonnet of your safari vehicle at a suitable location in the bush, are a camp favourite!
Activities
- Game drives (full or half-day)
Child Policy
Kwihala Camp will accept children over the age of six. Due to its remote location and open design, we would normally only recommend Kwihala to families with older children (12+).
