This region is excellent for year-round game viewing and is also one of the best places in Tanzania to spot cheetah. Of course, it’s most famous for the wildebeest migration during the months of January to March, when the migratory herds gather in the southern Serengeti and Ndutu to graze before their journey north into the Masai Mara. The grasses here are rich in nutrients encouraging the wildebeest and zebra to linger and graze long enough to give birth to their young and build up strength to continue their journey.
As well as being a wonderful location for viewing the migration between January and March, Lake Masek offers reliably good birding throughout the year. The camp has impressive views of Lake Masek where you may see flocks of flamingo, while the surrounding acacia woodlands are home to a large variety of birds not found in other parts of the Serengeti. As Lake Masek is outside the boundaries of the national park, off-road driving is permitted which adds to the game-viewing experience.
