Mai Chau Lodge is situated some 3 hours south of Hanoi in the gorgeous Mai Chau Valley. Surrounded by rice paddies, mountains and lakes, this idyllic retreat is an absolute haven and an ideal base for activities such as kayaking, cycling, trekking and rock climbing.
Mai Chau Lodge also offers guided excursions to several nearby White Thai villages. Led by local guides, these tours offer a genuine insight into life in a rural Vietnamese community—you’ll have the chance to explore traditional stilt homes, learn about weaving and rice cultivation, and try on the local dress.
Fewer tourists visit Mai Chau than, for instance, Sapa, but the valley has been getting busier in recent years. Nevertheless, the village tours here are generally very well-managed and respectful, and avoid the pitfalls sometimes associated with this form of tourism. All of the staff at the hotel are from the local community.
Though it’s a remote lodge, Mai Chau doesn’t lack modern amenities. There’s a swimming pool, sauna and steam room, and bar and restaurant with marvellous views. The suites are beautifully furnished.
Accommodation
Mai Chau Lodge offers sixteen rooms and suites, all with views of the mountains or valley. The interiors are traditionally furnished with polished hardwood furniture set against bright, locally-sourced fabrics. All rooms have air conditioning, satellite TV, internet access and tea and coffee making facilities.
Dining
Mai Chau’s restaurant, Bo Luong, has lovely views over the lake and paddy fields. Breakfast is a light, continental-style buffet. Lunch and dinner are fixed multi-course menus with an emphasis on local Vietnamese dishes. The pool bar serves snacks.
There are no restaurants near Mai Chau Lodge, so you’re very much restricted to what’s on offer at the lodge, but the food is generally very good.
