Mfangano Lodge is located on Mfangano Island, Lake Victoria, where it sits in a secluded bay on the western shores of the island. It's a lovely, intimate lodge, perfect for a few nights at the end of a hot, dusty safari, particularly for those looking for a nice alternative to a beach lodge.
A small remote hideaway, Mfangano Lodge is situated under ancient fig trees on the lake shore. At its centre is a cosy open-air sitting room and dining area, with views out onto the lake. Around this are scattered six guest chalets and a small swimming pool, tucked away amongst the trees. A jetty extends from the lodge into the lake. The hills that surround Mfangano Lodge are filled with trees and flowers, and a pleasure to explore on foot, while the lake offers dramatic sunsets.
Mfangano Lodge is primarily a place to relax, but it also offers plenty of activities, including water skiing on the lake and fishing, for which this area is legendary.
Mfangano Lodge combines perfectly with a Kenyan safari. From the Masai Mara, it's a brief one hour flight, followed by a 20 minute boat ride on Lake Victoria.
Accommodation
The guest chalets at Mfangano Lodge resemble Zanzibari beach chalets, with their whitewashed stone walls and thatched roofs. They have been carefully positioned among the trees on the lakeshore so as to ensure guests' privacy as well as a view of the lake. Each of the rooms has been individually decorated, though they share many features, such as the carved wooden four-poster beds and colourful Kenyan fabrics. The bathrooms are just beautiful, with wide windows overlooking the lake and deep bathtubs integrated into the stone walls (as well as separate showers).
There are just six rooms at Mfangano, of which four are doubles and two twins.
Dining
The meals in Mfangano Lodge are superb. Delicious salads and catch of the day are served with fresh bread made daily and chilled wine.
