Mt Meru Game Lodge is one of Arusha's older lodges, originally founded in 1959 by Dr A. Von Nagy as a means of funding the Arusha Animal Sanctuary, which provides a refuge to orphaned animals (hence the full name, "Mount Meru Game Lodge & Sanctuary").
Situated just outside Arusha, Mt Meru Game Lodge has a lovely setting on the banks of the Usa River, surrounded by over 30 acres of well-kept gardens. Small and intimate, it's a welcome alternative to the busy city hotels in Arusha central. The presence of the sanctuary on the same site gives guests the chance to view up close a variety of wildlife, including plains game such as zebra and eland.
Accommodation
Mt Meru Game Lodge has 17 rooms (15 standards and 2 suites) - individual cabins scattered throughout the lodge gardens. Each has a verandah at the front, while inside they are comfortably if simply furnished.
The suites are larger, each with their own private garden, and ideal for families or groups.
Dining
There's a formal dining room where meals are served a la carte, and a more relaxed gazebo with private terrace where lovely roast lunches are served every Sunday. The restaurant at Mt Meru Game Lodge is open to the public, not just hotel guests, and is quite popular with Arusha residents.
