Mvuu Camp is a small and cosy bush camp, ideally situated on the banks of the Shire River in Liwonde National Park. A classic safari lodge with tented chalets, it offers a remote but comfortable place to stay in a region of Africa that receives few visitors.
Mvuu, which means "hippo" in Tonga, is so-named because of the large pods of hippo that appear in front of the camp in the Shire River. Other big game includes hippo, elephant and black rhinoceros, the latter introduced into the park from South Africa as part of a successful breeding program.
Activities at Mvuu revolve around boating trips on the Shire River and 4x4 game drives, with a special focus on black rhino tracking. Nature walks and bike rides are also popular. Birding enthusiasts will be able to participate in virtually non-stop birding around Mvuu. The birdlife is as varied as it is prolific, especially along the Shire River, where the African Fish Eagle and the Pel’s Fishing Owl are frequently sighted, as well as Böhm’s Bee-eater and White Backed Night Heron.
Accommodation
Mvuu Camp offers twelve cosy safari chalets. Constructed from roughly-cut stone and thick wooden beams, with thatch roof and canvas sides, the chalets are decidedly rustic. They feature either twin or double beds draped in mosquito nets, and en-suite bathrooms (shower only). All chalets open onto a covered verandah with lounge chairs. Two of the twelve chalets are family units, accommodating up to four.
Mvuu’s airy thatched lounge and bar looks out onto the Shire River where crocodile, hippo, elephant and an array of birdlife can often be seen. There's a sheltered boma where evening meals are usually taken, and a small swimming pool with deck chairs for relaxing between safari activities.
