The Pilgrimage Village Boutique Resort and Spa is a peaceful rural retreat with a wealth of facilities and an enviable location amid lush surroundings on the outskirts of Hue. It’s a fully self-contained resort, complete with boutique spa, multiple dining venues, and a gorgeous pool.
Pilgrimage is somewhat unusual in that it is located in the countryside about 4km from central Hue (but just a 15-minute drive in the hotel’s complimentary shuttle bus). It’s a nice change from the hotels in the city centre, which can be rather noisy at night. The tranquillity of the resort is further enhanced by its lovely tropical gardens, which are carefully tended to.
While in many cities being situated outside the centre would be a problem, this isn’t the case in Hue, as very few of the historic attractions are actually located in the city centre. Indeed, Pilgrimage Village is actually very well-positioned for visiting a number of Hue’s major sights, including the famous Tu Duc and Khai Dinh tombs. The Imperial Citadel, Hue’s most impressive historic attraction, is a 15-20 minute drive.
We loved the Pilgrimage when we last visited in 2014. Lots of resorts adopt the ‘village-style’ layout, and it can often seem a little contrived, but the Pilgrimage has a real sense of style and grace. It’s fairly big, with 100 rooms, though it occupies a large plot of land and feels wonderfully secluded in its verdant gardens. The rooms are lovely, particularly the higher category suites with private pools.
Accommodation
In keeping with the village theme, the Pilgrimage’s thatched rooms are designed in modern Vietnamese style with wooden floors, woven fabrics and covered balconies with a view of either the lake or countryside. Beyond these similarities and the same basic amenities—AC, TV, Wi-Fi—the rooms vary greatly in size and design, ranging from fully self-contained cottages complete with private pools and kitchenettes to the standard king-size deluxe rooms. There are four family units, with two bedrooms each (one double, and one twin).
Dining
The Junrei Restaurant is an airy pavilion with a high ceiling raised on wooden columns. The food served is Vietnamese fusion with some regional specialities. You can start the day with breakfast by the lily lake in the outdoor Valley Restaurant.
