Richard's Camp

Masai Mara, Kenya

Richard's Camp

Richard's Camp (now Richard's Forest Camp) is a highly exclusive seasonal tented camp situated in a conservation area north-west of the Masai Mara National Reserve.

Richard's Forest Camp (formerly, Richard's Camp) is an exclusive seasonal tented camp set in a private concession north-west of the Masai Mara National Reserve, a game-rich region where riverine forest and short grass plains are prevalent—perfect territory for 4x4 game-viewing! The camp is owned and operated by Richard Roberts and was originally built as the Roberts’ family home. Richard's extensive knowledge of wildlife, flora and fauna comes from his 25 years of growing up and living in the Masai Mara.

Richard's Camp has acquired a reputation as one of the most authentic, intimate camps in the Mara. It is one of many settler-era Kenyan homes that have been converted into safari camps, but unlike others, Richard's hasn't expanded into a massive resort, but rather has opted to remain small (just eight tents), and so still retains the ambience of a family home. This is a camp that just invites you to relax. The rooms and public areas are beautifully furnished, with lots of lovely little touches, like private open-air Victorian baths hidden away among the trees, where you can relax at the end of a busy day exploring the Mara, surrounded by flickering candles and the sounds of the African bush.

Richard's Camp is also a fantastic destination for game-viewing. Its location in the private Ol Choro conservation area, outside the boundaries of the national reserve, opens up lots of possibilities, including the option to take part in activities such as game walks, night drives and bush meals. A particular highlight is the scenic flights, led by camp manager Richard, an experienced pilot.

NB. In addition to Richard's Forest Camp, a new camp, River Camp, has recently been built. This is located about 30 mins from Forest Camp and is slightly smaller, with just six tents. We have not yet had the chance to visit River Camp, but hope to do so soon.

They have 24-hour electricity (solar generated) and en-suite bathroom tents with flush toilets and hot showers.
