Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge is a small, highly luxurious mountain retreat tucked away in the foothills of the Virunga Mountains, a chain of volcanoes that occupies the Rwanda-DRC-Uganda border. It is set right in the foothills of one of the most prominent of the volcanoes, Mount Sabyinyo, and is only a short drive from the entrance to the Parc National des Volcans (or Volcanoes National Park), one of the last remaining habitats of the mountain gorilla.
Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge is the most impressive lodge in the area. The guestrooms are stunning, and the public areas – consisting of bar, reception, dining area and library – carefully-appointed. It's the location, however, at the base of Sabyinyo, that makes the lodge stand out. Extensive viewing decks allow for marvellous views of the surrounding volcanoes and the verdant agricultural lowlands.
Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge is a 2 hour drive from Kigali.
Accommodation
Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge offers eight rooms: five standard cottages, two suites, and one family complex. The cottages are spread out across the lower slopes of Sabyinyo, and have been carefully positioned to make the most of the wonderful views. Inside, they are beautifully furnished and feature a large bedroom, spacious living area with fireplace, modern bathroom with stone bath and separate shower, and private patio with a view. They resemble private villas more than they do typical lodge accommodation - those who appreciate their space and privacy will be at home at Sabyinyo.
All of the guest rooms follow a similar design. The family unit has an extra bedroom and bathroom.
Dining
Contained within the main lodge building, the bar and restaurant has a cosy fireplace for the cold winter months, and outside decks for alfresco drinks and meals when the weather turns warmer.
Most meals are taken in the lodge between activities. Picnics can be arranged on request.
