Selous Impala Camp is a high-end safari lodge set among Palmyra and Tamarind trees in the north of the Selous Reserve. The camp offers beautiful tented suites, excellent game-viewing and the opportunity to dine under the stars on the banks of the Rufiji River.
Impala Camp's central dining and lounge area is built on two levels, granting wonderful views of the surrounding bush. Separate to the main lounge, the camp features a cosy bar and fireplace, and a sheltered swimming pool, ideal for cooling off after a hot and dusty game drive, or for an evening sundowner! Lantern-lit pathways connect the central area to the guest tents. The tents are spaced well apart, with the furthest of them a few minutes' walk away from the public areas, in order to ensure guests' privacy (Maasai askari are on hand to act as guides).
Impala is one of our favourite camps in the Selous. It's small, intimate and has a great location. The rooms are absolutely lovely without being overly plush. We often recommend a few nights here at the end of a stay in the Selous, perhaps combined with its sister camp, the rather more basic Lake Manze.
Impala Camp closes during April and May.
Accommodation
There are eight Meru tents at Impala Camp, raised on wooden platforms and set among the trees. Most enjoy views of the Rufiji River from their private verandahs. The tents are spread out at some distance from each other, ensuring a good level of privacy.
Inside, the tents are attractively, if rather simply furnished, with double beds, bright fabrics, writing desks and plenty of storage space. At the back of the tents, a curtain opens to reveal an en-suite bathroom complete with shower, double basins and flush toilet.
Dining
The candle-lit dining room is set under a thatched makuti roof with views of the river. There is also a well-stocked bar.
The food at Selous Impala Camp has been wonderful each time we've visited. The manager is Italian and this is reflected in the cooking, with pasta, risotto, mozzarella salad etc a regular fixture on the menus. Dinner is a fixed, four-course menu. Most dietary requirements will be catered for.
The meals at Impala Camp are served at private dining tables on the lower and upper floors of the main structure, rather than at a communal dining table.
