Selous Private Camp is set on the banks of Lake Nzarekera, one of the many oxbow lakes that bejewel the Selous Game Reserve, in southern Tanzania. What makes Selous Private Camp different from anywhere else in the Selous, or indeed East Africa, is its size. Consisting of just four large tented suites, Selous Private Camp is among the smallest luxury safari camps in Tanzania, and provides a very exclusive environment.
Though small, Selous Private Camp does not lack facilities. The camp has its own generously-sized swimming pool, private dining area and bar, and a lounge with wildlife reference library. The public area is on raised wooden decks, set amongst a grove of doum palms, and furnished with comfortable sofas. There’s a real feeling of space to Selous Private Camp - they could so easily have built a large lodge on this plot, but instead chose to keep things small and spread out.
Selous Private Camp is intended to be booked on an exclusive basis, by a family or small group. Its sister accommodation, Selous Safari Camp, is larger and caters to individual bookings. It should be mentioned that, while the facilities and accommodation at Selous Private Camp are exclusive, game-viewing activities are often shared with Selous Safari Camp (i.e. they use the same guides and vehicles).
Accommodation
Selous Private Camp offers just four tented suites, comfortably furnished and set on raised platforms along the banks of Lake Nzarakera. All of the tents offer an impressive view, and have been positioned to catch the sunset over the lake.
The tents at Selous Private Camp are in all respects identical to those at Selous Safari Camp. They are exceptionally large, and built under high thatch ceilings in order to keep them cool. They have large bathrooms, separated from the bedroom by a canvas partition, and are equipped with flush toilets and outdoor showers (with hot running water).
Dining
Selous Private Camp offers table d’hote dining that draws on a mix of international and African influences, incorporating lots of fresh vegetables, fruits and spices.
