Shinde is a small, eight-room camp situated close to the heart of the Okavango Delta, in a private concession just north of Moremi Game Reserve. It is one of the original Delta camps, and has over the years acquired a reputation as one of the best. It doesn’t offer quite the same levels of luxury as some of the Delta’s newest luxury bush camps, but it manages to stand out for its terrific location and unique treehouse design, as well as its very competent safari guides. It’s possible to enjoy the full range of Delta activities at Shinde Camp, from mokoro rides to 4x4 game drives and guided walking safaris.
The design of Shinde Camp is highly unique. It sits under a canopy of giant ebony and fig trees, with its main public areas on raised, split-level teak platforms built among the trees, and connected by wooden walkways and staircases—the dining room is located at the top (third) level, and provides wonderful views over the floodplains in front of the camp. Other facilities include a casual, “help-yourself” bar, relaxed lounge, ground level plunge pool and fire pit.
Surrounded by crystal clear waterways and overlooking a permanent lagoon, Shinde Camp is a good choice for those keen on water activities. Motorboat and mokoro (canoe) excursions are offered most of the year, and fishing trips can also be arranged. Visits to the heronry at Gcodikwe (“Gadikwe”) Lagoon are a particular highlight, especially between September and November, when herons, ibises, storks and other waterfowl flock to the islands that dot the lagoon in order to breed.
Land-based activities, including day and night game drives and guided walks, are also possible from Shinde Camp, making it a particularly good option for those planning to visit just one camp in Delta, as it offers the full range of activities.
Shinde Camp is closed during the first three months of the year, between January and March.
Accommodation
Shinde Camp offers eight tented rooms, all with full en-suite facilities. Unlike the public areas, the tents are built at ground level, albeit on raised platforms. They connect to the main area by sandy footpaths. One of the tents is a honeymoon tent, located a short distance from the others.
The tents are Meru-style tents – rectangular, with an opening at the front. They’re comfortably furnished, but they are a little small compared to other camps in the Delta. At the front of each is a large verandah with chairs and a view of the floodplains. At the back is an en-suite bathroom with shower and flush loo. All tents are supplied with hot running water.
Shinde Enclave is a recent addition to Shinde Camp. It is a private camp located a short distance from, but separate to, Shinde Main Camp. It has just three tents, a private lounge and dining area, game drive vehicle, and its own camp staff.
Dining
We love the dining area at Shinde. It is located on the top (third) level of the camp and offers superb views of the surrounding floodplains. Meals are served at a long dining table, beneath an extravagant chandelier. Private dining can be arranged on request. On clear nights, meals may be served under the stars in the boma.
Shinde offers a well-stocked bar (essentially a large fridge—you’re invited to help yourself!)
