Opened in 2010, the Sunshine Hotel is a small, sixteen-room resort situated on Matemwe Beach, on Zanzibar’s eastern coast. A competitively-priced mid-range resort, the Sunshine Hotel's small size and great beach access make it a much more preferable option to similarly priced resorts on the busier western coast of Zanzibar. There’s a quiet charm to the Sunshine Hotel, which offers all you would want from a good Zanzibar lodge—rustic beach chalets, a relaxed pool area, and direct access to a beautiful stretch of white sand beach, without any of the excess or pretense of many of the larger resorts.
Accommodation
Sunshine Hotel offers just sixteen rooms: two standard ‘Garden Retreats’, twelve ‘Sunshine Suites’, and two Honeymoon Suites. The Sunshine Suites are contained within shared makuti-thatch beach chalets, with four rooms to each unit, two on the ground floor and two upstairs. All of the rooms have private terraces/balconies, the upstairs rooms with views of the ocean.
The Garden Retreats are similar to the Sunshine Suites, only smaller and positioned further from the beach.
The two Honeymoon Suites are positioned on the beach, and enjoy a private terrace/garden with plunge pool.
All of the rooms feature an en-suite bathroom with shower and toilet, and stylish furnishings including Zanzibari carved furniture and stone benches. They lack air-con, but we found the electric fan, combined with the sea breeze, sufficient.
