Thawale Lodge is a mid-range camp situated within the Majete Wildlife Reserve in the Lower Shire Valley. Positioned overlooking a floodlit waterhole that attracts plentiful wildlife, Thawale Lodge aims to provide a traditional bush safari experience of a kind that is rare in Malawi. It is not a luxury camp, but it offers a good level of service and access to a region of Malawi that is rarely visited. The camp is entirely unfenced and frequented by wildlife.
Thawale Lodge is approx. one hour's drive from Blantyre. Prior to the opening of the more upmarket Mkulumadzi Lodge, it was the only safari camp in Majete. It is run by the African Parks Network, and all profits help fund the protection of Majete Wildlife Reserve.
Accommodation
Thawale Lodge accommodates its guests in six tented chalets (two double, four twin), each with a private verandah overlooking the waterhole. The twin/double chalets are spread out so as to offer a good level of privacy. One luxury chalet features an open-air shower with a view of the waterhole.
In addition to the standard tented chalets, Thawale offers a thatched family cottage with two en-suite bedrooms, a kitchenette and lounge, accommodating up to six.
Public facilities include a central lounge/lapa with bar and a thatched restaurant.
Thawale Lodge is supplied with electricity by a generator. The chalets have electrical outlets and fans. Mobile reception is limited.
