The Outpost Lodge is an award-winning, Italian designed eco-lodge situated in the northernmost reaches of the Kruger National Park. Wild and remote, it occupies a stunning location on a hill high above the Luvuvhu Gorge, with dramatic views of the surrounding wilderness.
The Outpost's design is austere and minimalist. Constructed largely of stainless steel and canvas, the lodge is as spare and stark as the cliff side it occupies, its harsh design softened only by its plush furnishings. It provides a welcome contrast to the typical wood and thatch safari lodge design.
The Outpost Lodge's main appeal is in its unique design, remarkable location and relative remoteness (you are unlikely to see many other tourists in this region of the park, which for a long time remained closed to development and which is still subject to very strict planning restrictions). Game drives are generally good, but owing to the dense bush, this is not prime game-viewing territory. Those looking for exclusivity above all else, however, will find much to appreciate in the appropriately-named Outpost Lodge.
Accommodation
Outpost Lodge offers 12 rooms, or "pods", all widely dispersed and linked to the main lodge building and swimming pool by teak walkways. Each room occupies an open, airy platform, with stunning views of the bush below. Blinds and wraparound panels allow the rooms to be sealed at night, though you may prefer to leave them open and wake to the sunrise!
Room facilities include air-conditioning, hot and cold running water, and en-suite bathroom with bathtub and outdoor shower.
Dining
Meals are served in the main lodge building with magnificent views of the bush. The day starts with a cold buffet of fruit and cereals, followed by a full English breakfast. A generous buffet of salads and cooked dishes is provided for lunch, while the dinner menu is fixed. There is a good wine selection.
