Vamizi is a wonderfully intimate getaway located on a small island in the northern Quirimbas Archipelago, not far from the coast of Tanzania. Small and private, it has a highly exclusive feel, combined with a decidedly relaxed atmosphere—the term “barefoot luxury” might well have been coined to describe Vamizi!
7.5 miles in length and barely half a mile wide, the tiny island of Vamizi boasts six different beaches, all gently shelving and perfect for swimming at low and high tide. Vamizi Lodge is located on a 8km stretch of beach, and is the only lodge on the island. There’s a small village of 300 people on the western side of the island, but no tourist developments.
Tropical vegetation is abundant on the island, with over 40 arboreal species recorded, including 5 different mangrove species. Turtle season on Vamizi is from July to April and the whale season from July to October.
Accommodation
Vamizi has just ten spacious sea-facing beach villas. These private rooms are set 70 metres apart, each nestled among trees a few feet from the beach. The palm-thatched villas are furnished with king-size beds draped in muslin and fitted with thick cotton sheets. Mozambican marble bathrooms come equipped with separate bathtubs and showers (indoor and outdoor).
Each villa has a wide verandah with a Swahili day bed - perfect for an afternoon siesta!
Dining
Fresh seafood is served in the restaurant overlooking the ocean. Private dining on the beach can also be arranged.
Breakfast and lunch are generous buffet meals. For dinner you have a choice of set menus.
