Nosy Be is easily reached. There is an international airport which welcomes a weekly direct flight from Johannesburg and charter flights from Europe, though most visitors arrive via a domestic flight from the Madagascan capital, Antananarivo.
The island offers a wide variety of accommodation to suit all budgets, from modest beach lodges to five-star resorts. There are also a handful of island resorts located off the coast of Nosy Be, including the luxurious Tsarabanjina, a 90-minute boat journey away, and Tsara Komba Island and its eponymous lodge. Both properties offer a more exclusive experience.
In and around Nosy Be Island, Madagascar
Nosy Be’s primary appeal is of course its long, idyllic sandy beaches – arguably the best in Madagascar. However, the island offers more than just R&R; If you are looking to be active during your stay then there are lots of water-based sports available, including excellent diving, snorkelling and sailing. Heading inland, there is a road that circles the island as well as more remote dirt tracks suitable only for quad bikes or travel by foot. Away from the coast you will find wonderful scenery of lakes and waterfalls as well as plantations of cocoa, vanilla and ylang ylang and, in the south-east corner of the island, the Réserve Naturelle Intégrale de Lokobe.
Several excursions can be booked locally, such as visits to the Lokobe Reserve, where a wide variety of wildlife including several species of birds, reptiles, chameleons and black lemurs can be observed, or boat trips to the tiny islet of Nosy Tanikely, which has a pretty beach and marine park where you can dive or snorkel to view coral and turtles.
