The next two days will be spent in the company of other travellers as you join a small group tour onto the high Andean plateau.

Continuing higher into the mountains you’ll see dormant volcanoes and, in the distance, dramatic snow-capped peaks.
This morning will be spent en route to Chivay, with stops at various scenic spots along the way where you can admire the view and stretch your legs. On arrival in Chivay, you’ll have a group lunch and then the rest of the afternoon is free. You may want to rest, as at 3,600m, the altitude at Chivay may take its toll. This morning you join a group tour for a boat trip on Lake Titicaca, the world’s highest navigable lake. The scenery here is incredible, with the vast flat waters reflecting the blue sky and surrounding mountains.
The Uros Islands are manmade using totora reed found at the edges of the lake. Although now mainly a tourist spot, some locals do still live on the islands. You’ll have some time here to meet a family, learn about their traditional way of life, their clothing and the islands. You may even have the opportunity to take a short boat ride on one of their dragon boats, also made from reeds.
Departing Uros, your journey continues to Taquile Island. Unlike most other islanders on the lake, the inhabitants here speak Quechua, an ancient Incan language. You will also have time for a short stop at La Raya (4,335m), the highest pass between Puno and Cusco.
You will be met on arrival at the bus station in Cusco and transferred to your hotel. Overnight El Retablo (B, L).

A ‘retablo’ is a form of folk art involving the display of small figurines within a box. El Retablo hotel has sought to incorporate this folk art into its design, and throughout the converted colonial property are hand painted displays, decorating everything from the ceiling in the restaurant to the headboards in the bedrooms. El Retablo also uses local textiles in the rooms, which together with the wall art helps to give it a wonderfully authentic character.El Retablo is small and discrete with just 17 guest rooms. There is a central courtyard where guests can relax (live music takes place some evenings). The guesthouse is located just a few blocks uphill from the Plaza de Armas with views over the rooftops of Cusco.

In the Plaza de Armas, which has been the scene of many great historical events, you will visit the cathedral, constructed of great slabs of red granite and displaying baroque-style silverwork. You then journey a short distance out of the city to surrounding ruins, including the fortress of Sacsayhuaman, a magnificent example of Incan military power; Qenqo, a ritualistic site with subterranean galleries that form an underground maze; Puca Pucara, the red fortress; and finally Tambomachay, also known as the Incan Baths. After the tour you will be driven back to your hotel, with the rest of the day free for you to wander the cobbled alleyways of Cusco at your own pace.

Visit the interesting circular terraces that can be found at Moray, and the vast white-terraced salt pools found in Salineras, near Maras. After lunch, drive to Ollantaytambo. This fortress was constructed to guard the entrance to this part of the valley and protect it from possible invasion by tribes from the jungle lowlands. It was later the scene of Incan resistance in 1537 when Manco Inca’s forces faced Hernando Pizarro’s troops. Your last stop will be Pisac, famous for its colourful markets, where you will have the chance to interact with the locals and try out your bartering skills!

After breakfast you’ll be driven to Ollantaytambo, where you will board the Vistadome train for an amazing journey to the famous Incan citadel of Machu Picchu.
