After a group lunch, during which your guide will give a briefing on the journey ahead, there will be time to shop for safari drinks before you depart for Chobe.
It is a short drive from Kasane to your campsite in northern Chobe National Park. Arriving late afternoon, you’ll help set up the camp that will be your home for the next two nights, with the rest of the evening free to relax as the camp crew prepares supper.
Day 3: Chobe National Park
Today will be spent exploring Chobe on morning and afternoon game activities, typically with a game drive in the morning and a boat cruise along the Chobe River in the afternoon.
The most famous of Botswana’s big game safari parks, Chobe is sustained by the Chobe River, which provides a constant water source attracting plentiful wildlife throughout the year. Herds of elephant and buffalo are a common sight, as are families of giraffe, prides of lion and plentiful antelope, including zebra, kudu and wildebeest. Less commonly sighted species include cheetah and wild dog.
Day 4: Chobe - Mango Tree Road (700km; 8-9 hours)
An early start this morning, as you pack up camp and make the journey north to the Botswana-Zambia border. After completing the necessary border formalities, you’ll continue north towards Liuwa.
Today’s drive is long but scenic, as you pass through dense forests of Zambezi teak and then drop down onto the Zambezi floodplains and travel along the beautiful Mango Tree Road towards the town of Kalabo, passing through several villages en route.
At the end of the day’s long drive, you’ll set up camp in a forest clearing near Kalabo.
Day 5: Mango Tree - Liuwa Plain National Park (350km; 8-9 hours)
Today’s is another long drive, as you rise early, pack up camp, and complete the journey to Liuwa Plain, setting up camp just outside the national park late this afternoon.
Day 6: Liuwa Plain National Park
After breakfast in camp, you’ll make your first trip into Liuwa Plain National Park.
The landscape of Liuwa is dominated by enormous flat plains of golden grass interspersed with small islands of raffia palms. The rich grasslands and floodplains attract huge quantities of plains game, including blue wildebeest (Liuwa experiences the second largest wildebeest migration in Africa, second only to the Serengeti), zebra, tsessebe, eland, roan antelope, Lichtenstein’s hartebeest, red lechwe, reedbuck and the lovely oribi, as well as predators including occasional lion, leopard and cheetah, and large hunting packs of hyena and wild dog—the latter of which, normally so rare, are sighted fairly regularly in Liuwa.
November is a fantastic time to visit Liuwa. At this time of year, the annual wildebeest migration from Cameia National Park in neighbouring Angola has typically reached Liuwa, with the hunting packs for which Liuwa is famous in hot pursuit.
Day 7: Liuwa Plain National Park
Continue your exploration of Liuwa Plain NP on morning and afternoon game drives, returning to your camp at the southern boundaries of the park to rest between drives.
Day 8: Liuwa Plain National Park
This morning you pack up camp and drive further north into Liuwa, setting up camp in a second location for the next two nights, the remainder of your stay. You’ll enjoy a full day of game-viewing en route.
Day 9: Liuwa Plain National Park
Continue your exploration of Liuwa Plain National Park on morning and afternoon game drives.
Day 10: Liuwa - Mango Tree Road (350km; 8-9 hours)
Depart Liuwa after an early morning game drive and retrace your route back along the Mango Tree Road, setting up camp outside the town of Kalabo.
Day 11-12: Sioma Falls
This morning you will have the option to visit the market in Kalabo, a local food market. You then continue your journey south towards Sioma Falls, a dramatic, 20-metre high horseshoe-shaped waterfall set amid beautiful surroundings.
This will be your camp for the next two nights, from where you’ll enjoy picnics by the falls and swimming in the Zambezi River.
Day 13: Sioma - Victoria Falls (400km; 8-9 hours)
Pack up camp this morning and continue your journey south, following the Zambezi River to the Victoria Falls, where you cross over into Zimbabwe.
Tonight you stay at a comfortable lodge in Victoria Falls (typically PheZulu or Bayete Lodge – to be confirmed closer to departure), on B&B basis. Supper this evening is to your own account.
Day 14: Victoria Falls
Today is at leisure in Victoria Falls. A tour to see the Falls can be arranged, as can other local activities, including river rafting or a scenic flight over the Falls.
Day 15: International departure
Your safari ends this morning at Victoria Falls, unless continuing with the 4-day Botswana extension - please refer to full itinerary for more details (via "download itinerary" button).
Liuwa Plain, Chobe and Victoria Falls
Departing November, with optional extension to Savuti and the Okavango Delta
Liuwa Plain, Chobe and Victoria Falls
This affordable camping safari offers you the opportunity to explore one of central Africa’s most remote national parks, Zambia’s Liuwa Plain. In November, Liuwa hosts the continent’s second largest wildebeest migration, and is also renowned for its hyena and wild dog hunting packs, famously captured in David Attenborough’s ‘The Hunt’. While the five days spent in Liuwa form the focus of this safari, the programme also includes time in Chobe National Park and in visiting the Victoria Falls.
