Mahe Island

Although Mahé is the most populated of the Seychelles islands, it is paradoxically one of the most overlooked, at least compared to neighbouring Praslin and La Digue. Those who know Mahé well, however, will testify that it has among the most beautiful beaches in the whole archipelago.

With an area of 150 square kilometres, Mahé is the largest island in the Seychelles. The presence of Morne Seychellois, with its 900 metres peak, also makes it the highest. Fine weather and beautiful beaches can nearly always be found somewhere on Mahé: sometimes you just have to cross to the other side of the island!

Mahé is still relatively unspoilt and home to many superb, often deserted beaches. South Mahé, in particular, is home to long stretches of beautiful white-sand beach skirted by underwater coral gardens – perfect for diving. The interior offers lush tropical hills that are ideal for hiking.

There's much to see and do in Mahé. To the north, explore the capital, Victoria, with its lively port and impressive clock tower, modelled on London's Big Ben.

Visitors to Mahé can also learn about the traditional arts and culture of Seychelles at the Craft Village and Creole Institute, explore the island interior via a network of walking trails, enjoy a variety of water sports and excellent diving sites—and, of course, explore the famous beaches.

Most visitors to the Seychelles will fly into the capital, Victoria, on Mahé Island, and then head straight to the surrounding islands of Praslin and La Digue. As a result, many of Mahé's most beautiful beaches, such as Baie Lazare and Petit Anse, receive few visitors. (This isn't true of all of Mahé's beaches, and those located near major hotels, such as Anse Forbans and Grand Anse, can be very busy.)
